She made eight records for the label before leaving for Atlantic — where she recorded “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)” in 1967. “I cherish the albums we made,” said John Hammond, her A&R man at Columbia. “But Columbia was a white company that misunderstood her genius.”
